Maternity wear can be expensive; while re-purposing existing wardrobe pieces to mix and match for a growing bump is practical and fun, it has its limitations! A middle ground had to be found between style and comfortability as I practically gave up wearing my normal pants and fitted non-stretch dresses (especially work dresses) by the end of my first trimester!

It takes some trial and error, but one very versatile maternity wardrobe style that I discovered during this time was the multifunctional maternity & nursing dress/top. While not all maternity & nursing dresses/tops are made the same, the good ones should be able to be worn before, during and after pregnancy! At least this is how I justify my purchases.

My current favorite is this dress from Seraphine. This dress comes with a detachable knitted crop-top, finishing at a figure-flattering point, just below the empire waist (which makes it very petite friendly as the cut creates an elongated lower body). The knitted top can be lifted up to allow easy nursing access after your baby is born; it can even be detached completely or replaced with another crop top for a different look!

If you are petite like me (5’2’’) I would suggest you visit their official website for petite sizes for a better fit. If you are fine with normal sizes then I would suggest you to make the purchase from John Lewis as they offer free returns (Seraphine.com doesn’t).
